Rising Star
My last firm was this way. I went in house and now I work 9-5, have like 9 weeks total of paid time off including company holidays. And I can actually use my PTO.

Yeah, this is why I went in-house. 9-5, no weekends

This kind of work week is unfortunately common, especially during peak periods or during high-stake cases. It's not just you, I'm pretty sure many lawyers face this. Some firms and practices have better work-life balance than others but for the most part ... this is the life we chose :)
Only if you own a law firm. None of my employees are expected to work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week unless we have a trial coming up, and even then I’m working all those hours with them.
365 days a year? Not normal. Sometimes, and even sometimes for a month or two at a time? Yes, sadly normal. But I’m in biglaw m&a so ymmv.
Biglaw lit partner. This is 100% accurate.
Depends on what type of law you’re in and who you work for. I don’t work more than 40 hours a week unless it’s an emergency or big trial or something, which happens rarely. I don’t have a minimum billing requirement though. It’s possible but you may need to take a lower-paying position in exchange for the work-life balance.
I'm in an ID firm in one of our complex litigation groups. Depending on my caseload it is like this. Sometimes for a few months at a time. Waxes and wanes in litigation with all the litigation fires.
I have never worked that much in a given week. I’ve sought out small firms with flexible billing target tracks, and it’s worked well for me. I usually bill 30-40 hours a week, and rarely, rarely over 45.
I have this kind of week occasionally, but it’s not the norm for me. It’s not sustainable long term.
As for having a life, it’s a big struggle. Scheduling things makes a big difference. I think people are more understanding if you literally already have time blocked off on your calendar. Not refute, but it helps in my experience.
