If they’re students from my law school or my undergrad, I always respond. A 30 minute informational interview with an alum led to my 2L SA & my current job. I feel like I should pay it forward.

Yep ^. I wouldn’t respond to a total stranger with zero connection to me, because frankly it’s odd to me that someone like that would reach out. But if it’s someone from my undergrad or law school, I respond. People did the same for me.

I started ignoring…it was getting to be too much. Feel awful but if I’m not billing I’m wasting time lol
I take them all. We get billable credit, so why not. But most of the time these people do not have the credentials to summer at my firm. 😢
I only respond if I met them somewhere. Like if I went to a reception my firm hosted and handed them my card because we were talking. Otherwise I ignore it. We have a recruiting staff for basic questions, their email is on the same website they found my email on. If they wanted information they would email the recruiting email address. They don’t want information, they want to chit chat with me because they think it will give them an advantage at OCI. I sympathize but I don’t have the time for that.

I respond if they went to my law school or something and I feel like they have a shot.
I always did at my firm and now that I’m in-house. I benefited from mentoring during and before law school and hope to pay it forward.
I usually say “I have no power over who gets selected for OCI interviews [true] but if you are selected for an interview, reach back out to me and I’d be happy to chat with you before OCI.”
For those who responded, did you ever end up getting some sort of a referral bonus if those people ended up joining the firm? I have heard of firms offering a 5k bonus for stuff like that
Haha, those bonuses are for lateral hires not for incoming associates straight out of school. No one gets money off of referring an OCI hire.
Never lol
When you were in law school and trying to build your network, wouldn’t you want someone to respond to you that you’re trying to connect with? Even if it’s just a 15 min call or email exchange. Assuming these are legit emails and not just mass emails to get a job.
I respond. But I also tell them the question of describe your typical day is dumb and stop asking people that at least for my area.
