One of the partners at my firm inflates his own hours when the associates don’t bill enough to exhaust the budget. IE., billing double what the senior associate billed when the partner hardly participated in the project. None of the more senior partners care. Driving me crazy.

Partners do this constantly. Keep your head down lol

Refer them to the partner

None of your business at the end of the day. Not saying this doesn’t happen, but you likely have no idea what time the partner is putting in on random things that may just be captured under a different billing entry

like

If a partner is simply increasing associate hours that aren’t worked, then I totally agree. I read OP’s post to be talking about his disagreement with the partner’s hours - not associate hours. And I was saying that one associate on a matter likely has no idea about the actual time I put into anything.

Why do you care?

I have an offer from KPMG, and I am in talks with collabera, they are offering about 35% hike which will be 100% hike from my current ctc, while KPMG offers 65% on my current ctc.

KPMG is a research and stakeholders management role and collabera offers strategy role including working direct with VP.

I’m a 4th year and I’ve never billed contemporaneously for even a one full week. I guess I’d just rather have one day of torture recording all my hours at the end of the month than that extra little torture daily. I’m wondering how common or rare this is in BigLaw. Thoughts?

Junior Associates - How much student loan debt are you and your peers in these days? A few young partners and counsel at my firm were discussing the student loan moratorium and most of us were convinced we could have paid the majority of our loans off with the bonuses associates got these last two years. But we are all old and when we graduated 150k to 200k was about the max student loan debt people graduated with. So educate me. What is the average student loan debt these days?

Is it a big deal if a partner questions how much time you spent on something? Can’t they just write off time that seems excessive, or am I missing something? Sometimes I take a really long time to do things because I switch matters frequently, and I do a lot of research to make sure I’m doing things right.

From a vault ranking perspective, is it safe to assume V100 is all sweatshop big law? Reason I ask is because I want to lateral but not to a gunning big law firm — want to stay in big law but not at the ones at the top of the food chain like I am now. Want some sort of work life balance and wondering if the “lower ranked” big law firms offer this? Could just be my fantasy though…
