From a vault ranking perspective, is it safe to assume V100 is all sweatshop big law? Reason I ask is because I want to lateral but not to a gunning big law firm — want to stay in big law but not at the ones at the top of the food chain like I am now. Want some sort of work life balance and wondering if the “lower ranked” big law firms offer this? Could just be my fantasy though…

Eh really depends on the group and clients. One practice group in a V80 could be worse than another at a V5.

like

I was at an AM150 before moving to a v5 - I work less now at my v5. Just make sure you ask associates off the record / outside of their interviews about their hours.

like

Literally same - granted, I’m a junior associate

Lower rank doesn’t always mean less work fyi

like

I did this and tried out a below-market V100 and then an Amlaw200. The former worked me just as much, and Amlaw200 was a bit more lax but I was missing out on the $ by a lot (blackbox after like the 4th year). Ended up going back to a V50.

I think lockstep comp is probably a better indication of expectations, but WLB can vary significantly even among V20 firms depending on your group and location.

like

Adding to what was said above, “lower ranked” firms can have worse WLB if they want associates to handle more number of “smaller clients” so you end up billing just as much/even more hours but with the added stress of switching between more active matters at the same time.

like

But you can get more experience that way. So there are pros and cons.

Absolutely not. It's very practice and market dependant.

Best WLB is probably to be found in V60-20 firms. Those are where you’ll find variance in billable requirements while still maintaining lockstep comp.

Lots of talk about CohnReznick on here lately… let’s address a few points.

1) Yes, our salaries are in line with B4. Happy to discuss specifics with the skeptics.
2) We are one of the few firms still actively hiring people without FDD experience.
3) Our WLB is miles better than B4.
4) Yes, we are paying strong referral bonuses because our practice has literally doubled in the past year.
5) All of the above is due to a strong pipeline and significant growth within the practice.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

I’ve been at a job for a few months and hate it - partners set unrealistic deadlines, micromanage, and create work that truly is not necessary/push urgency when there is no real urgency. I had other offers prior to accepting this job that may still be options, and going back to my old job (for a pay cut) might also be an option. I can’t tell if this is just burnout, growing pains, or just an untenable work environment. Would you ride it out for a year at new job or pursue other options? HELP!

I’m in this business to cure my inferiority complex. Making lots of money, working with fortune 500 clients and walking the streets of NYC with a suit, tie and briefcase makes me feel important and worthy.

I often wish I could be like my law school friends who either moved to small towns or have public sector or non profit jobs, wear sweaters and jeans to work and make far less than me, but are happy with their lives, feel a sense of meaning with their work and don’t need external validation.

PSA: The grass is greener in a regional firm if you can lateral over as a partner. I lateralled over last year and my billable expectation is only 1700. I have my own clients and make about 100k (after bonus) more than I did as a senior associate. The upside is probably capped because top equity partners probably make 1.5 to 2 million here but it is all worth it for the WLB. I only take on what I want to do and I help out other partners only when I feel like it.
