5-6 years is ages and far from a sure thing. Follow your passion, consulting isn't going anywhere if it doesn't work out.
My worry is that I am ~40 now. Will I be able to get back to consulting or another job if this doesn’t go far?
Can I ask what exactly you’re doing in Ed tech op? Sounds interesting and like an area you can make real impact!

Keep your network lit up in case it doesn’t work out, but give it a shot - there are always consulting jobs out there.
Go for it!
Chances are you’ll always be able to get back into something in tech based on the experience you have had in consulting. As long as you have a reasonable plan for managing your personal finances, go for it !
I know someone took a leave of absence to go work in a startup (she was a SM). It didn't work out after a year so she was able to come back.
You can probably do something like that and reassess in one year
Yeah she was a SM at Accenture Canada
