It can be a bit hard to find upward mobility within your current job, but if you can leverage your experience you should have a decent chance of landing a supervisor role somewhere else. Looks for job openings in your area
I suggest you review the job description of a supervisor. Identify your strengths and weaknesses, and focus on learning what you need to learn to close the gap between what you are currently doing and what you are capable of doing.
Do you have any tips on how to identify your strengths and weaknesses? I'm thinking sometimes I have trouble being honest with myself about this
After this position comes to a leadership position, demonstrate your skills as a leader, it would be a good way to show your interest to improve.
You're going to have to develop your leadership skills and prove yourself withing your current job if possible. Otherwise, you might consider applying for a job somewhere else after you build up that skillset
Just wait until a position opens up and then apply for it. If the manager likes you that is a HUGE plus but if you are the most skilled out of the candidates you will probably be selected. The most difficult thing will probably be getting other cashiers to accept when you suddenly have a higher degree of authority than they do. Can cause a lot of backbiting and resentment from people that you consider yourself on friendly terms with, and you need to be prepared for that.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that there isn't a guaranteed path to a higher position, a lot of cashiers think that if they were hired first they should be promoted first. It doesn't happen that way because some people just have that moxie and drive behind their work, and some don't. Try not to have a viewpoint of "I deserve this," as much as "I can do this." Then express your interest to the manager and make sure you ask for feedback (and actually listen to it LOL)
Listen to what you supervisors are asking for improvement in and actively try to work on it. You should review your company’s policies on promotions for their employees. My work has 4 opportunities to “cross train” or more known as promotions in the first year. Each comes with a pay raise. From there you get an opportunity once a year from my knowledge from other colleges. My company promotes moving up their employees but some may prefer to hire an outside supervisor.
If you’re interested in the role go to your upper management and ask how you can improve to fit into a leadership role. Asking what they are looking for can lead you into the right direction in stepping into leadership.
