Finance loosely approves it based on need but it’s never 100%.
Client can kill a job and pull funding at any time. Agency can decide to pocket the money and make someone do it internally. Agency might lose business and put someone in that seat before laying them off when the contract for you would have ended.
I’ve noticed a troubling practice at some agencies where they pitch to a client without informing the vendors or freelancers they line up (and sometime have prepare pitch materials) that it is, in fact, a pitch. Then, when they lose the pitch or don’t secure the contract and funds, they say, “The budget wasn’t approved,” or, “The job just went away,” at the last minute.
In my case, client wants to do something and we have nobody internal with time. Then some other project gets delayed so people free up and the agency saves the hard costs of hiring a freelancer.
Or the client’s boss decides to do something else. Or a client tells an account person they need to do something and then we realize it was just talk and they can’t or don’t want to pay for it.
Meanwhile, creative and resource management have to be ready to go so they start calling people. But I know it sucks when the recruiters don’t let candidates know.
This has happened to me thrice in a row over the last couple of weeks as well … Unfortunately I’m at just as much of a loss as you are as for a definite reason why this kind of crap seems to be on the uptick as of late* — but hopefully hearing it’s not only happening to you might help take a little bit of the sting out of the overall shitty feeling repeat bait’n’switches like this inevitably leave even the best of us with🤞🫠😑
*Outside of the obvious “global uncertainty” excuse a.k.a. The same “unprecedented times” b.s. Corporate America ran with for so many consecutive years on end that the adjective no longer logically applied… so they just rebranded the same tired shit with shiny new / ‘less timing specific’ tagline 🤫💩
Unpopular opinion, but it might be because the recruiter/agency secured a better team (they do multiple reachouts).
