Pros: money
Cons: chasing money forever
$. No life. More $
Con: you're the associate in all the finance Instagram memes
Pro: way more money at every level.
Less work as you get senior
Higher on the value chain in m&a deals than consulting. People respect bankers more
Sleep in your own bed
Great exit opps - esp into other high finance roles
Cons: more hours and weekend work is normal
More abrasive culture
I def regret leaving banking for consulting
Left because my previous firm wasn’t closing too many deals. After getting a few other banking offers at more active shops, I took the consulting opp because it seemed like it would provide for more intellectually stimulating M&A Strategy work that I thought I can leverage for buy-side better than post mba ibd Associate work.
Easy...
Pro: ~300k TC first full year if you perform
Con: you lose your soul
pretty sure everyone in banking hates MBA direct hires
Yes and that’s why most people dislike new mba hires in consulting
Just had brunch yesterday with a bschool friend currently at JPM IB ... he absolutely hates his life. No predictability in his schedule and though he does make a ton of money, he never gets to enjoy it.
It'd be worse. Sweat shop
Regret why?
Don’t go to post mba banking thinking you’ll get PE eventually
Yes. Know a guy who went from an EB (moelis/Lazard/evercore) to Apollo as a post mba associate
Potentially faster route to retirement, but you have no life until said retirement
