It means find an action plan ASAP. Either:
1) Wait for things to get better and in the meantime continue to upskill, do freelance projects, spec work, etc and continue to apply for jobs until an offer letter comes through.
2) Jump ship and head to another industry (preferably more recession-proof)
3) Open your own business. A boring but profitable one perhaps
You are in trouble if you think you were meant to do one thing for the rest of your life. Maybe reinventing wasn't in your 2024 plans but hey! what can ya do? 🤷♂️
Does it say how many overall this year?
The BLS data on advertising employment is hard to reconcile. Because the official data showed an all-time high a few months ago, while everyone in agency world has witnessed waves of layoffs since 2022. I think the BLS data must also cover PR, media and performance marketing.
For me, it means retirement (or semi-retirement) is likely coming sooner than planned.

Update- This data surprises me compared to what I read on Glassdoor/Fishbowl. Though “Advertising Employment” is down, “US ad agency employment” is up: July 2024 vs. year earlier, +5,400

I mean, every month I‘be felt like we’ve hit rock bottom, so I suppose you can only go up from there.
I thought I was on a recession proof team, been working in house for 12 years only to get laid off a week ago.
What industry? I thought I was safe in booze and was sadly mistaken.
