I scream at people on the subway in the morning because I’ve heard it’s healthier to blow off steam before work as opposed to after.
One of the things I’ve always discussed with creative friends is that you must leave the agency to keep yourself creative. Spending 18 hours a day inside a workplace doesn’t help you at all, no matter how much creativity online, blogs or Cannes compilations you watch online You gotta get out, check galleries, go to movies, play sports. Some of my best ideas have come to me... doing other stuff. Creativity is what happens when you are busy doing something else.
Take my 8 yo and 5 yo to school. Just listening to the things they have to say, the questions and their answers. Amazing.
Consume information that isn’t your job. Shows, movies, books. Go home at a reasonable hour. We can’t create with no inputs. Listen always. To everyone and everything around you. Try new things. And definitely get the fuck out of the office.
First ever boss in the industry had us go sit in public places. See in real life what people are doing, wearing, looking at on their phones.
Also, travel. See the real world if you’re going to create stuff for it. Go anywhere new to you. A new part of your state, region or country
Anti-habits. Do new things go new places. Get off at a different train stop and walk a different route. Read a different type of book. Stay up super late or get up super early. Routines make me less creative
Love the “anti-habits” term!
I used to teach book making, so I make custom sketchbooks on occasion. I still paint when I have the time as well, which is more meditative than anything. Podcasts or ebooks with a coffee on the train to work also get my mind ready for the day.
I cycle to work and spend not more than 8hrs a day at the office.
I also do not work after 7pm and on the weekends. This to be on my best the hours i’m at the office (and the time i get paid to be creative)
You’re fired
Clawing into a check week to week
Try the artists way. Awesome to clear your head in the morning and s lot of inspiration for how to take space for your creative self
Wow y’all sound like some jaded ppl
Getting out to do literally anything other than work. Going to a park, reading a book, taking completely unrelated classes. I’m somehow always surprised how I’m most inspired when I actually go out to do other things.
Go home
