It’s kinda like dating with therapists. You need to go out there and test the field. Don’t be afraid after 1 or 2 sessions to tell them it’s not a fit. They get it a lot. Go online and see what’s out there.
My mental health waxes and wanes, I’m in a relatively good period at the moment and at my worst I would’ve never believed that’s possible. I think just knowing that helps a lot. Nothing is forever. Stuff sucks now but it’ll get better. Hang in there and sorry you’re dealing with this.
I agree but all too often this “dating” leads to finding a therapist you’re too comfortable with. A therapist should make you uncomfortable. It’s a relationship that has to grow.

Having a good support system is key and therapy can be a big part of that.
From my experience it helps if you know what you want to focus on, and then each practice will suggest therapist based on your intake convo. From there it’s a bit like dating, you’ll have an intro session, feel the person out and then decide.
If you’re living downtown shoot me a DM and I can share a few places to reach out to.
Find someone you vibe with who understands your specific needs, like if you're queer, neurodivergent or have experienced trauma or have addiction issues. I did years of talk therapy that helped a bit, but it wasn't until I found specialized trauma therapy that I was able to really overcome my biggest challenges.
Other than therapy, the biggest thing for me has been taking care of my nervous system through consistent sleep, activity, nutrition, breathwork/meditation, time in nature and social connection. It helps you feel more regulated and less anxious and shitty.
Somebody else said "nothing is forever" and that's so true, even if it feels like it will never get better. I spent most of my life thinking it wouldn't and it did. So much is waiting for you on the other side.
In addition to the above - ask for consultations!Almost all therapists will do a 10-15 min one for free so you can gauge the vibe and see if it might be a good fit before booking a session. You can also ask about the things you’re hoping to get help with and understand what their process might be and if that works for you.
Drinking is much simpler than a therapist and I don’t have to talk to anyone.

Are you me?
All of the above, but I also moved in house. The improved work life balance helped immeasurably.
