I'm trying my best, buddy.
I’m a hack, also.
20% of the people do 80% of the work.
They thrive because too many decision-makers don't know the difference between competence and confidence.
Torontonians love to crap on this city and everything in it. We have a weird complex where we can't be proud of ourselves and how far we've come but are always criticizing each other and our systems and insist our best isn't good enough and we must be better.
I'm tired of it. There's a lot of good here, in this industry and the city as a whole. We just complain so much that good people get discouraged and leave.

My guess is OP won an award or two this year and is now convinced everyone else sucks.
Two crab fisherman - one American, one Canadian - are walking down the street in some perfectly emblematic cross-border fishing town.
The American crab fisherman turns to the Canadian “yer bucket is missing its lid, better be careful or they’ll climb out”
Unconcerned, the Canadian turns to the American “I don’t have to worry about that - these here are Canadian crabs, if one tries to get out, all the others will pull em back down”
There is a lot of work that keeps the lights on so the rest of us can fuck around. Someone has to make it.
I worked in a small market for a number of years and then in Toronto. The ratios for talent and competence are about the same in both places. I would even say it’s similar in every profession too. The question is is your doctor one of the elite or one of the schlubs? Chances are it’s the later. Lol.

Conversely, I worked in London UK and in Toronto and also found the talent ratio of good to bad creatives to be similar.
There are a lot of talented people here but they’re overshadowed by people who are cocky, talk a big game, and think they’re more talented than they really are.

As someone who has worked in New York and Toronto, agency talent is pretty strong here. We would recruit Canadians into US roles because we knew we were getting people groomed as craft experts.
Toronto clients though, not great. No diversity of thought or diversity of experience.
This is a broad comment, but I’ve worked in both markets for 6+ years each.

OP –– Have you worked in a different city? If so, what was your assessment of the talent in other markets?
Was in a fun brainstorm recently and the lack of effort and ideas from several creatives was astonishing. Very common situation. I don’t know how some people stay employed.
Im an introvert. 100%. This was not a loudest wins sort of thing. Everyone had turns and quiet time and different avenues to share. Hear you though. But if you don’t contribute you don’t contribute. Period.
