Recently, someone at work mentioned their support for a particular political party and started pressing others about their views. It created a bit of an uncomfortable atmosphere. I get that we all have our beliefs, but I feel like work should be a space where we can focus on our jobs without that pressure. Should political discussions be kept out of the workplace?

Politics definitely aren't something to be discussing at work. Those discussions tend to get heated. And I have no problem telling someone I don't discuss politics at work.

Absolutely! Political opinions are personal and should be kept to yourselves.

It drives me crazy because people know exactly what they are doing. We’ve had a few years now of more tension than ever in politics. It’s that which gets me, they aren’t trying to have a genuine conversation. And even IF I don’t find it appropriate. Religion and politics, nothing but deeply sensitive and personal.

Nothing gets people riled up then politics 🙄

I agree completely. Work should be a space where people feel safe and respected, not cornered into debates they didn’t sign up for. I’m all for open dialogue, but there’s a time and place and forcing politics at work is not it.

We talk to our colleagues like theyre our friends. And sometimes they are, but not everyone is. Not everyone will respect your opinions.

Of course politics and religion are nobody's business at work. What did your parents teach you about manners? Here's what's human about it though: people coming from a conservative right wing background are trained to see other backgrounds as an existential threat. I've noticed those folks who ask around and just gotta know are invariably anxious about what social morey's are grounding the culture here. They want to relax and trust that they know who is "woke" (empathetic, humanistic, committed to fairness enjoys peace) and who is loyal to conservative principles of hierarchy, authoritarianism, etc. (Ableist, enjoys seeing suffering...) Oops, did I betray my politics?

People should keep their views to themselves but you can't ban conversations. If someone doesn't want to talk about politics they can just speak up and say so.
