Recruited as a temporary contractor for $17, I was put through 3 contracts then tested for personality, critical thinking, etc. They offered $21/hr, I countered at $24 and we settled at $20.75. I'm currently at $24/hr after 4 years full-time status. Recently, a young man with no schooling or experience is recruited at $26/hr for the same department with the same title. With 5 years experience, I might have better leverage at a different company. Thoughts? Advice?

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?
