How is it anything other than 5 yoe going on 6?
Pro
If you started in the fall, I think most would say you have 5 yoe going on 6.
I’m confused. Is it 6 or 7??? 6-7, 6-7, LOL!!!
5yoe, are about to be a sixth year
Some people started in Jan 2021 given COVID so not everyone is equal
Think of it this way…
Add up how many full years of experience you have completed since you began practicing law as a licensed attorney. This number is your YOE.
If you add one more to that total for the current partial year then you have your “going on” number.
It is a point in time calculation not an annual one so you have to be more precise than saying I started practicing in 2020. If you started in December 2020 you still only have 4 YOE until you reach your anniversary date next month. If you started prior to Nov 19, 2020 then you already have 5 YOE. Even if you started practicing on 1/1/2020 you still won’t have 6 YOE until 1/1/2026.
Think of it like your lawyer birthday - you don’t say your 40yo until you actually reach your 40th birthday.
I know what you mean. Some attorneys look at it like law school… you’re a 1L before you’ve completed your first year. So they say you’re a first year when you start practicing. So in this case that’s where 6 going on 7 comes from: 2020 is year 1, 2021 is year 2, etc. I think saying you’re a first year associate is different from I’ve been practicing for 1 year. When you’re hired… you go in as a 1st year before you’ve completed a year, right? Idk lol
You are 16 going on 17.
6th year
5 going on 6. How would it be 6 going on 7? That makes no sense mathematically.
