... Continued from my post...
I am eager to officially pivot to a Product Manager role, and my specific goal is to find a remote position with a US-based company that pays in USD, while I continue to live in Canada.
My reasons for this are straightforward: the cost of living in my city has become on par with major US tech hubs, but Canadian tech salaries have not kept pace. I also believe the US market offers a wider and more mature range of product opportunities.
I'm not asking for H1B sponsorship, as I plan to work from my home in Canada. My big question is how to make this happen.
For anyone who has successfully navigated this or hires for these roles:
1. How do you find these jobs? -- Are there specific job boards, or is this primarily through networking? (e.g., "Remote - US Only" often filters me out, even if the role could be done from Canada).
2. What is the most common employment setup? -- Do US companies hire Canadians as contractors (C2C), or do they use an Employer of Record (EOR) service like Deel or Remote.com?
3. Is this the most direct path to earning in USD? Does it overcomplicate things with taxes and incorporation?
4. How do you position yourself? -- When I apply as a BA, I get BA offers. When I apply for PM roles, I'm competing with experienced PMs. How do I best frame my "BA-doing-PM-work" experience?
I'm feeling a bit stuck on how to start this search and would be grateful for any actionable advice, strategies, or even just keywords to use. Referrals would be amazing, but I'm really just looking for a path forward.
Thanks for your help.
I would try to find a small startup. With that, people are much more open to pivots. Focus on honing your cover letter and resume to explain your applicable skills. Also, take some time to learn some basic aspects of Jira
Thanks. This does help. I'll start doing this as well.
Based on your responsibilities, that's what I've done as a product owner at a few different companies. Responsibilities between PO, PM and BA will vary from place to place but I'd say to keep your eyes open for all 3 as it might be easier to achieve what you want in a market this tight by getting hired "lower"and then moving up
Thank you for your reply. I have taken a similar approach. I used to be an assistant manager but I had to step down to business analyst when I moved to Canada. The hikes are also unimpressive. And the scope of promotion and/or lateral moves is also very low where I am. So I don't know if I can take the same approach again. That is why I'm searching for a new place to work. However, almost all the open positions are for a senior product manager. On paper I don't have enough product manager experience (~8-10 years). So I'm feeling like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. Do you know of some companies that I could look into?
Hi I am on the similar track too. I work as a business analyst but I am more inclined to becoming product owner for which i believe i already possess most of the required skills. I am in Canada too and I was working in the US for few years.
Checking to see if you were able to land a job as a PO ?
