Seems like a lot of last minute rug pulls happening. I keep getting emails from people saying they’ll use me for projects coming up and then two days later say “sorry, looks like we didn’t have the work we thought we did,” or “budgets got cut sorry.” Literally has happened three times in the last month. I’m starting to think I’ve been black listed. Anybody else?

I think everyone’s head goes straight to “blacklisted” when things aren’t going great, but I can almost guarantee it’s a reflection of the market, not you.

likesmart

It isn’t you. Resourcing is getting the order from finance to cut the freelancer spend and overwork the FT staff so they can post higher Q4 profits for the C-suite bonuses and shareholders.

I could’ve written this 2 months ago. I had 4 freelance interviews in a month, got all 4 gigs, and they all fell through. One of them even after I signed the contract. I swear I thought I was blacklisted too, but nope, the market is just THAT bad. Things got better though! Just keep pushing and something will happen!

Thanks, C1. Idk about baller because that was after 4 months of crickets lol. But I guess when it rains, it pours! It was hard not to think every irrational thought after the 4th one fell through, but I think in the end, it worked out for the better.

likeuplifting

Yep, that’s happening to me. Happening to my friends, too.

What do you guys think about the upcoming midterms? Any feel for which way we're swinging?

I feel under qualified at work but I also don’t know how much of it is in my head or in reality. I head a team and they seem to be happy… but I’m also personally not satisfied what we’re delivering is enough… so I have this weird mixed feeling of the stuff we’re doing not really being that stretching, but at the same time I feel out of my depth. I really don’t know what to do and whether to hold on in the hope I’ll learn something or go back to a lower grade and a more comfortable life.

Emergency question!! Sending over an invoice to a client. We are both in mass. Do I charge tax on a digital delivery? I did on my last two but now I’m questioning it. Help!

Does anyone know of a coworking spaces that focus on creatives and/or marketing companies? All the ones I know of like technexus, wework and 1871 in Chicago are tech company focused.

Are there any free invoice sending and tracking tools? I’m currently using google sheets but feel like there has to be an easier way.

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

Quick PSA: one of the perks of going in-house, is that you’re no longer at an ad agency and all that that entails.

Just started a new in-house tech fl gig and it’s giving me whiplash! Somehow this dept has brought every person/toxic behavior from their old agency just to a new environment. Nowhere is perfect but good god. I honestly think companies/HR could learn a lot about their depts from freelancers.
