Had a pair of college aged girls look at me like I was on a list just for saying “welcome” and “goodbye”. I don’t know what I did that warranted that kind of look other than exist while being a man aged over 40. Stuff like this is why I don’t bother socializing honestly…
I truly empathize with you. It's like a man in his 40s having a job that requires him to interact with people is automatically some kind of predator. Then, if you DON'T say anything to them, you get accused of having an attitude & giving poor customer service. Yes, your existence is the source problem because humankind has become increasingly ignorant.
I try to be all friendly with a "Hi there! How’s it going?" and they just breeze past like I’m old furniture. Then five minutes later, they want help and suddenly I'm the most important person in the world.
Hahha i know right. Crazy how it works!
Honestly, this is one of my biggest pet peeves working on the floor. People can be so rude and inconsiderate to retail workers. Don't you know that we're paid to be polite and kind? Why can't you just be courteous for a second? I understand that sometimes people are going through tough times and have a lot on their minds, but a simple smile or greeting isn't asking too much.
From my experiences & observations, the customers who are dealing with things seem to be more considerate than those who just want to stop out of boredom. Referencing our requirement of being polite, I had one customer call that “white s**t” & say it isn't welcomed in “the hood”. It comes down to employee vs customer/employer because the employer expects us to be kind to customers who reject kindness.
I truly don’t understand where common decency has gone recently. It really feels like those of us in customer service are so looked down upon, as if our jobs mean less than others because we’re not sitting behind a big desk or making all the decisions. It really isn’t that hard to be kind! Do you feel like this has increased over the past few years, or is it just me?
I don't know what's happening, but it's true that people have just lost all semblance of being polite. Just the simplest little courtesies are treated like a huge obligation. I mean, I'm not expecting a day at work at my dumb job to be dinner at Downton Abbey. But people have reverted back to being absolutely feral.
It annoys me when you literally just walked through the doors and you get this from staff. Advice, give customers time to have a little browse and approach them with hi how are you?/how can we help?
You are a sad excuse for a human being...
Ugh, yes! It’s like, just a simple ‘hi’ or ‘thanks’ isn’t too much to ask, right? Definitely can be a bit irking when they just stare.
I stopped greeting customers. Our company policy is to greet each customer, but as I've mentioned to my DM recently, I'm a human being, not a machine. Whatever energy other humans bring around me affects me just as any would those others. The looks of “Don't talk to me” makes me care less about policy. The behaviors of most customers seal that deal.
I just say a simple, "Welcolm in". It let's them know I've seen them, that I'm glad they're shopping local, and they don't even have to answer!
What!?!? This is what I’m talking about training is required in CUSTOMERS MENTAL HEALTH not yours. narcissist. Get fucking training in ALL KIND OF REQUIRED TRAINING.
Has it not occurred to you that maybe those customers give that certain look because they're concentrating on the reason for their visit. Or maybe they were reflecting on whether or not they locked the car doors/house, etc. That certain look could mean anything & if it irks you, you have a closed mind. Thinking of only yourself & how it made you feel instead of just shrugging it off & going about your business. I often wondered if my geeting to customers as they came in would distract them & cause them to stumble over say the carpet runner or their own feet. Until you are that customer, do you really have the right to judge them?
Never thought about it like that, you’re right. Definitely puts it into perspective.
No way, that's a disaster. Disapoval or acceptance in proper conditions... Usually is a simple beat
I like respect with examples of hospitality. Sometimes mistakes can be reported so clean up the connection. Think like a champ.
