I at one point had 5 arrests on my record. One of those arrests was for theft, but luckily reduced to disorderly conduct. Fortunately for me all of those took place within a year at age 19, I got my shit together, and got them expunged when I was 24. That sorted out the CPA. The bummer is, though my charge was reduced for theft, it showed up when I onboarded to one prior employer and my current employer (both Large investment firms) on FBI background checks. Always embarrassing, but I haven’t been turned down yet.
I was charged with murder in an another country, told them it was self defense. They can’t prove that it was not since the case never went to trial. I got my license just fine.
Per auditor judgment, we deemed this post to be reasonable - passed on further testing.
I actually had my initial CPA application rejected because I reported I had never been charged, and apparently a prior speeding ticket I received was initially a “reckless driving” charge before it was reduced in court. Should’ve paid more attention to the ticket! I explained what had happened and all was fine, I imagine it’ll be the same for you. They’re looking for anything related to finance, fraud, etc not some drunken rowdiness.
Disorderly conduct. It occurred back in 2016 during undergrad days.
OP they care more about financial crimes not you and your college buddies getting too drunk and making fools of yourselves
Just be honest and tell them what happened biggest thing would be you not disclosing. Plenty of people have drinking/pot tickets and duis and get through fine (speaking from experience)

It’ll be fine. I’d keep it very short and simple. You had a disorderly conduct charge while in college in 2016. You paid a fine (or whatever) and have not had any such issues in the 7 years since.
You might want to include "this experience caused me to think carefully about my choices and actions going forward" or something to show you learned and were remorseful.
As someone whose sister had to hire a defense attorney for some stupid sh** she did, her attorney coached her to show as much remorse as possible
Yep. Had an arrest on my record for a misdemeanor (had not gotten it expunged at the time). It’s really just 1 or 2 questions on the whole app. They won’t even question it, just be sure disclose it. Got my CPA no problem in 2 states.
I mean, what kind of charges are we taking here? Is it theft? DUI?
Yes. Disorderly conduct. No issue, just explained it was youthful exuberance and celebration and I have matured since the incident. FYI I had more of an issue from PwC than from the CPA board.
I’m a Cali licensed CPA and have gone through this process. My Advice - do not be cheap. You screwed up so now you gotta pay up. Upon passing your exams, hit up an ‘administrative attorney’ to guide you with the application. Trust me it’ll be money well spent because they charge a lot more if your app gets denied and if you have to appeal the decision.
I have had a more serious (in my opinion) misdemeanor charge than that and it was fine. Explain what happened, explain the charges, take responsibility for your part in the situation and explain the outcome. Everything turned out fine and the didn’t have an issue with it.
What was your charge, if you don’t mind me asking?
Thanks everyone for all of your help and advice!
