Should we consider autopilot on a plane as AI? Modern pilots have to do very little in the actual operating of a plane these days, does it mean that we’ve had self flying planes for years now? How do we draw the line for self driving cars in that case? We still don’t have pilots out of the loop today, there’s a low chance that we ever have human drivers out of the loop as well.

I consider it AI only if it can make non-pre-programmed decisions.

My (limited) understanding of autopilot on a plane is that it keeps the plane at the altitude and barring you set and basically nothing else. Some can land themselves but I think that usually requires the airport to have an auto-landing system, in which case it simply aligns with that system and lands.

The autopilot cannot steer around weather, deal with any kind of mechanical or electronic emergency, or even change the fasten seatbelt sign. It doesn't make decisions.

Waymo is driving around my town every day with no human drivers and has been for years. In 99% of cases it is a better driver than a human.

Please help. I’ve moved up the ranks pretty quickly at the company I work for to become a Principal SE. My manager thinks the best next step for me is to move into management and leadership and has started pushing me to apply for an engineering manager role. They say that I will be a good fit because of my strong technical background paired with the leadership and people skills I display currently.

I’m torn because I do love being an IC but I’m interested in leadership also. What do I do?
