Yes, I've had a ex-boss talk poorly of me during reference calls. Even calls that were just verifying that I worked there, the ex-boss would be sure to throw in some zinggers.
I ended up leaving that employment off the CV whenever possible. When not possible, I ensured that it was not the job on the top of the list (ie. reverse chronological or longest tenure to shortest or Most relevant to least)
Eventually someone cut through the BS and later told me:
"You know your ex-boss gave you a terrible reference." Some light banter and further questioning later, "No one else I called had anything bad to say, so I had to listen to my gut and hire you."
May you find an employer who "listens to their gut" and hires you despite the efforts of sabotage.
I wish i could leave it off. Its where ive been since 2019 and the place i was at before isnt around anymore and i was there since 2009...
I've had some awful bosses, but I haven't had one try to sabotage my efforts to move on. Be sure to tell prospective employers about the situation and let them know that your current boss isn't credible. It's usually a bad idea to denigrate an employer, as it can make you look like a complainer, but if you know for a fact that the person is giving bad references you probably don't have much choice.
Yes, I had employers speak badly about me, to potential employers. I'm a trustworthy employee, l worked in environments, with sales goals. So, selling the most, gives you more respect. I enjoy helping customers, not persuading them to buy items, or manipulating them to open credit cards. So, l definitely, wasn't a crowd favorite.
The facts he’s literally “The Boss” and as the person in charge of leading his employees chooses to focus on gossip/drama is pitiful. Some people can just let a simple job title or position of power reshape their whole lives. Can lose themselves and entire perspective of humility thinking their better than, more important than; or just simply ACTUALLY think theyre entitlement is valid since hes boss, lol or fired !
Honestly by law all they are allowed to do is to give your dates of higher and if you're eligible for rehire or not I would definitely make sure that you let your perspective company that you are interviewing with know that your current employer doesn't know that you are pursuing other opportunities and if they choose that you are not a viable candidate that they are risking your current position
