Give them the number that would honestly get you to take the job (or maybe just a little higher than that so you can negotiate). Sounds like you don’t really NEED the job, so go for what you want and see if you get it. The recruiter sounds suspect trying to manipulate you like that - I don’t like the threatening tone of “don’t ask for too much or we won’t work with you”. Sometimes the recruiter is just bad, but maybe it’s indicative of the whole company culture/attitude, so something to consider.
I would say this - personally that kind of behavior is a bit of a red flag and if you're not hurting for the job, don't take it
Give them your numbers and see where it goes
Great points! I’m just gonna give them my don’t think too much about it number. I think is around 40% over my current TC and I’ll leave it for them to counter a negotiation or drop me and go for the “other” guy
So I did that as my number is slightly higher then the offer but the recruiter just keeps asking me for a number to say yes (with the other party caveat). I’m thinking about giving them a higher number I would not have to think things too much for.
Definitely give them a higher number. You're in a good place and have nothing to lose.
That manipulative tactic is unethical.. to take you thru an entire interview process
Then tell you you’re our #1 pick, however we have another plan b
And the contingency on who we pick is based on who we can get for the cheapest
Mannnn stay firm, if Googles knocking you’re talented enough for better
Thanks! Definitely sticking to my guns here. I do think it’s just one odd recruiter trying their luck over company culture.
What number would you truly say yes to that’s enough to leave a place that you like? The other party/candidate is none of your concern as this is about you only. If they are volunteering that there is another candidate and putting you against that option, then it seems they are not really focused on getting you specifically to join them. Give them the number and see what happens or tell them thanks, but no thanks. It looks like you have nothing to loose here.
I was in this exact situation last week OP. I looked at levels.fyi to get an idea and I talked to the recruiter about their ranges and my ranges. Their original offer was in the ballpark of what I was making. I was waiting to hear back from Google in the meantime and this company came back with an offer that even Google won't match (I got a 60% bump) and they leveled me up. So do your research and do not give them exact numbers.
Yeah, the minute I told them I was waiting to hear back from G and the level I was aiming for, they came back with a different offer. Good luck with your negotiations OP!

If you like your current job and the new job doesn't offer you anything significantly better, then you have all of the bargaining power in the situation. Tell them you need a 10% boost in the salary to justify leaving your current job. If they turn it down, then you've not really lost anything.
Go ahead and send them your "demands." You have nothing to lose.
Thank you everyone. I’ve given a total number which is around 35-60% of my current TC. The strange part is the recruiter almost wants me to design my own package (ie. decide signing bonus, base, equity) which feels a bit bizarre.

Sounds like an amazing opportunity. Lets us know what happens
Wait, what? I feel like that's illegal somewhere in the world. That sounds like a threat to me. Huge red flag.
