So it’s tax season and this is my first year filing jointly. (We got married in 2024, so we filed separate last year). Is there something I’m missing? Everyone said filing joint would be most beneficial. We both have extra withholding. But my job causes us to have to pay $600 to fed and $1000 to state. Could my employer have gotten my w2 wrong? How would I even be able to tell?

They changed withholding in 2019 and did not really advertise it. The new formula is not nearly enough. For us, if my wife had been our only income for our family of 6 we would have still owed. Luckily I do my own withholding and estimate high.
It sounds like you need to increase again.

Yeah I will tell the tax preparer to increase this year you can send me a dm and I will introduce you to the tax preparer

It’s possible they made a mistake, or it could be that you simply owe more than what was withheld. People often say that filing jointly gives the biggest tax break, but my husband and I have always filed separately. It might be worth meeting with an accountant to see what they recommend for your situation.

I have a tax preparer that can help you with all of that if you want to file jointly me and my hubby got about $50,000 last years cos the tax preparer help us

Owing taxes after filing jointly isn’t unusual, especially with similar incomes or higher earnings. Your W-2 is probably correct, but it’s worth double-checking against your pay stubs. Use tax software or a calculator to confirm amounts, and ensure all deductions and credits are claimed.

I have a VC/GE interview coming up (phone screen) and personally don’t know much about the space , it’s just an area that has always seemed interesting.

Does anyone have Recommendations on how to get up to speed/good questions to ask during the phone screen?

I would assume the first call will be pretty standard to any other company, but just want to be prepared.

I’m noticing that a lot of recent graduates at my job don’t know many basic computer skills (ie. Copy and paste short cuts or how to use the Microsoft Suite at all). I’m in an interesting dilemma. Very interested in leaving my company, but I am also going through IVF. I know most new jobs require a year wait before you can go on maternity leave. Does anyone know a great company to work for that does not require this? Obviously, I’m getting a bit ahead of myself, but if this works, I don’t want to accept a job and not be paid for maternity leave because I am doing this solo. Appreciate all the help!

Currently a Wealth Advisor for Citi but I honestly hate it here with a passion it’s the worst company I’ve ever worked for in my life and I’ve been in Wealth Management in the banking channel for over a decade. Series 7, Series 63, Life, CFP, ChFC, and soon to have my MBA with a focus in Mergers & Acquisitions. I’m look to enter another area of Finance at this point instead of starting over somewhere else from scratch, but not sure what direction to go. Interested in Investment Banking or M&A.

Is anybody here a notary? And how much are you making from that? Is it a potential side-hustle?

I am a registered sales assistant which means I have my series 7. I also have the 63 and my Life & Health license. I was a financial advisor but the role is commission only so I decided to take a role as an assistant for some time to learn etc. I really like my role, but I only make 32k a year and after taxes I only take home about 25k. I have a gut feeling that I’m not being paid market value but it’s tough to find comparable salaries. Do you think $15.38/hr is a fair wage in this case?

1. London base salary but I have to absorb all the expenses (train + stay)
I am thinking to negotiate to

2. home base salary and have my expenses paid for

I know that's depends on the amount I have to travel (and potentially stay) but at the moment this is unknown. Past 8 months was just twice a month + 2 nights stay.

The only thing I know is it won't be every week, the return trian ticket is about £80-100, depends I could plan ahead.
