I see this so often, I’d get a new hire class and half of them have no idea how to take a screenshot, copy and paste, no clue ctrl +F, can’t clear cookies and cache. Requested talent acquisition add a basic computer assessment they declined. Now we spend 2 hrs in each class teaching fundamentals one should have learned in grade school/college.
Yes this!! I’ve spent so much of my job now making trainings on very basic M365 material and computer literacy when I should be working on other projects. It’s crazy to see how little people now. I only graduated a couple of years before my new hires and I had much more computer skills then many of them right out of college… 😵💫
A lot of these skills are learned by seeing others do it in person, and wanting to use a shortcut. Recent grads have been doing remote assignments alone - not typing on a computer around others typing on computers (and as others have stated, not using keyboards).
I think its a combo of using phones/tablets more than computers...and more younger people use apple and not windows.
This would make a lot of sense! Definitely a lot more younger people using Apple products and relying on their phones for just about everything as opposed to a computer. It gives me more work to get them up to speed but it’s been fun building these courses!
This is an awesome problem to have that you can solve. Equally, try to move beyond seeing this as a "task." Rather, see it as an opportunity to think bigger about creating a corporate capability academy to help the business grow in this area/ take a strategic approach.
You propose a strong plan, you will get a seat as a strategic training partner at the C-Suite table. Show the C-Suite that T&D can improve the people part of the organization to help the business grow, remain profitable, etc. and lay out the steps--always tie your program training solutions to the business for revenue and growth.

So, put together your team and a strategic plan to come up with a solve! You've got this!
I wouldn’t train them. I’d refer them to YouTube channels and move on. There’s individual acocuntabiluty and manager coaching if their lack of knowledge is affecting work performance.
I think of it this way - I type with all 10 fingers and I’m fast and proficient. I have colleagues that type with 4 fingers. It looks awful, but they are also fast and proficient. Using a keyboard shortcut may not cut as much time on the task as you’d expect. The time you’re taking to train them negates the net outcome.
