The best thing you can do for your friend's family is to be there for them. Offer your support and let them know that you are available to talk if they need to. It may be helpful to provide some information about the DUI process to understand better what is happening.
Believe it or not, there is life after a DUI. It is a very awful thing to go through for the entire family. And while your friend didn't do the right thing in this case, he already knows that he screwed up bad. So just be there to help him get treatment. It can be a wakeup call for a lot of people
My best friend went through a similar thing last year and it was really awful (still is), but she's starting to bounce back. This is going to change your friend's life if he trusts the process and takes all the steps he needs to. That usually will mean treatment of some sort (for my friend it wasn't alcohol, it was narcotic dependency). Help his family clear the house of any chemicals that might cause him to stumble. He needs you right now, don't forget that.
I'm sure your friend is really embarrassed, but you need to not avoid them right now. Their family is definitely worried about them, and so are you, obviously, so talk to them about it. This might be a turning point in your friend's life that they didn't even know they needed. My husband was a "social drinker" until he got a DUI in college, and now he won't even touch alcohol.
