Rising Star
I took a 90-day leadership/accountability class once that involved having 15 minute calls every morning at 7 am. If I was late for any reason I was required to do 2-hours of community service. After about three of those (one was for being one minute late) I’m never late for scheduled meetings.
So punishment works.
Regarding ADHD I make sure I have plenty of notifications set up on my calendar and phone. And I do everything I can to be there at least 2-5 minutes early so I can transition
I believe that being on time is one of the simplest yet underrated leadership skills imaginable. You don’t want to be that person who rolls in late to a meeting. They might say it’s no big deal, but it is.
I find that setting my clock forward by even 5 minutes helps. I trick myself in to thinking I need to be there 5-10 minutes earlier than the actual start time.
Set alarms on your phone for 5-10 min before calls and zoom meetings, or in person meetings when you’re already in the office.
If you have to travel more than a few feet or floors within a building, set alarms for when you should be leaving + 15 min (based on traffic or commute time PLUS a buffer), then another one at the time you should be leaving.
I put rude messages to myself in mine (“leave right this second! No excuses!” Or “get the f*** out the door right now or you are gonna blow it!!!”) if I REALLY need to be somewhere.
Also figure out why you are late … are you getting distracted by random other things to do? Sucked into tasks and getting time blind? Procrastinating or being avoidant?
I know that I often will feel resentful on weekends of being on a tight schedule for casual things like lunch with friends, so I ensure I build in tons of procrastination time and sometimes pretend to myself I need to be somewhere 30 min before the actual time (putting it on my calendar and setting phone alarms for the fake time).
If I’m being avoidant about meetings I’m dreading, I set the mean-message alarms.
