So, what are everyone's thoughts on AI? Is it a helpful tool you use to make your job easier, or do you see it as the end of your career? I personally feel that it is a cheap cheat and something no real writer would use.

Your brain is a muscle and it atrophies if you don’t use it. Typing things into ChatGPT and copy pasting what it regurgitates will have serious effects on your brain. I don’t care if it makes me replaceable as a line item in the short run, I’d rather do things the hard way and stay mentally and intellectually sharp for the long run.

I used it to write my new business deck bio. Sometimes I use it if I’m writing in a specific voice and I need some jargon. I haven’t found it at all useful for scripts, idea write ups, or even headlines.

I think in general it can turn a terrible writer into a average writer, but it can’t make an average one into a good one.

Good thing you posted this. No one is talking about it anywhere else.

I use it when I need help finding a good keyword or inspiration for subject line structure. But it's certainly no where near good enough to replace copywriters.

Since everything needs to align to a prescriptive tone of voice for the brands I work on, I sometimes find it helpful. Especially given the extra short deadlines and the bureaucratic review process. I wouldn’t use it to create a new ToV, but I’ll tap into it when I want to make sure I adhere to brand guidelines.

AI allows lazy people to be lazier and creative people to be more creative faster. Copywriters who learn to use AI WELL will rise to the top, and those that use it to farm out their work will become very obvious as humanity gets wiser to AI cliches.

Personally, I see it as a research and drafting assistant. I'll train a local, private bot on brand standards, give it my draft of the current project, and ask it how I can improve for the second draft. Asking for a bulleted list of suggestions based on best practices and research for that content type usually gets it thinking more like a copywriter. If part of a sentence isn't flowing, I'll put the part I hate in brackets and ask it to give 5 alternatives for the phrase in brackets. It almost always gives at least one suggestion I can use. That's very different than asking it for email or ad copy and pasting that directly into my final product.

I am an associate at a UMM and my employment contract has a 4 month non compete (yes, even for associates) but I am thinking of lateraling. What are the implications of breaking a non compete? I didn’t say anything when I signed because I was desperate for a PE offer but it seems so unfair as I am just a lowly associate. I am not so much worried about getting sued, but about my current employer tanking my reputation if I leave and break the non compete.

How difficult is it to juggle a remote role with a hybrid role?

My current role is hybrid with at least two days a week in office. However, with the potential economic downturn, I'm considering holding on to the role to supplement my income.

I'm new to the overemployed movement, so I'm evaluating the feasibility of holding onto the hybrid role and the remote position.

Starting a new job next month, and considering taking two days off for kids’ spring break next month. Not sure whether it’s appropriate to request time off for a new job (I would’ve preferred not to take any time off for first three months). I may just be able to just ask for a single Friday off (so 1 day rather than 2 days).

Any thoughts on whether I should proceed with the request? I just came from big law and want to make sure I’m not making a bad impression on my colleagues.

So, you’ve reached the stage of your career where you care more about cashing a fat paycheck than making “creative ads”. You’d rather have the resources and free time to fulfill your creative itch outside of work than try to sell the next big idea to an 28 year old marketing manager with an annual budget of 150k. How do you make the absolute most money as a copywriter while still working a 9-5? Asking for... a... friend?

Am I particularly uptight, or is writing meant to be done alone, without a partner talking to you? With past partners, we chat through script notes and then I go off to execute. Current partner likes to sit and chat as I write. To me, writing is crafting a conversation. So I can’t talk to you and simultaneously talk to this audience. Of course I can just say “I’m gonna go write.” But since we’re both CD level, I’m like…is this his first rodeo? Maybe other writers are different though.
