It’s just a way to max-out the odds of a great line or campaign. Ring out the sponge. Creatives, myself included, tend to quit while they’re ahead. It’s human nature. Pat yourself on the back and call it a day. But it’s a great habit to just keep writing, rethinking the approach. Setting a quota is one way to encourage that.
And it’s not about raw volume, it’s about fortitude and work ethic, “That’s good, now let’s beat it. That’s better, now beat that one too.” Are you gonna have 100 great Cannes-winning lines? No. But you sure might have a great campaign in there somewhere. And that’s the job.
Here’s a helpful technique to get to 100 headlines quickly. I’m a writer and used to handwrite or type a line, then stare at it, fiddle with it, think about it. It was excruciating. And slow. Plus my boss would crank out a campaign within 3 minutes of me coming in to show ideas. I had to get faster. And better. So: set a ream of paper in front of you. The whole ream. Use a thicker sized marker. Sharpie Fine Point or larger. Then ... start writing. Anything that comes into your head, put it down on paper. A sentence. A fragment. A phrase. An idea. A germ of an idea. Think it, but don’t think about it. Just get it out. Make room for the next idea in your brain. Then write that down. Jam them all out. For as long as you can. Then stop, step away. Come back and jam out some more or collect your papers. Sort them into Yes and No. Build on or refine your Yes’s. Set aside your No’s to come back to if you need them. Sooner than you think, you’ll have your hundred. Six or a dozen of them or more might have potential. 1 or 3 may be awesome. And hopefully you’ll realize you’re a lot better writer than you ever knew.
CW4, you’re probably just in the monkey cage. Step away and come back. You’ll probably find something you like. Or ask someone you trust to give you some feedback.
When Sally Hogshead wrote 800 headlines for BMW (look it up), hundreds of those were great.
This was the first thing I thought of when I read the question. Reading lists like that can really help expand your thinking in what you explore
Use your gut. They're not all going to be golden, but if you think something is crap make a judgement. If you put it in and it gets picked, that's on you.
I usually only put lines I could live with in. Then put my recommendations up front at the top of the list.
Same haha. Thanks :)

If they’ve asked you for a hundred lines, they are likely asking you to do that because you’ve brought them 5 terrible ones. And if you write a hundred of them, you’re going to get all those terrible ones out of the way and it’s going to force you to keep going and find new ideas to explore. So make 100, then find the 10 you think are good coming out of that and put them first. And show the homework in the back
100% true.
Yes, but at least know you shouldn't include extremely shitty ones. Make sure the ones you present are on strat. Your CD is probably will see something in there that you might not initially think is 'good'.
There’s no accounting for taste. If someone is requesting 100 headlines, give them at least that many but don’t worry too much about editing. You might close your creativity off by trying to be too critical in the moment. When you’re done, select and be prepared to discuss your favorites. Always important to have a clear POV, even if you get overruled.

When I say it, I mean put in the leg work. But if you show me 10, I ask to see the other 90 and you don’t have them (even if they’re bad)...
This is a great practice if you can do it over a couple of days. Your perspective changes, and new things will inspire you. But, if you’re just pumping the same well. The same shit is going to keep coming up but in slightly different ways.
