Story Time:

A month ago, I put in my notice and left PA for good. I had interest from other smaller firms (where I initially thought I wanted to go after burning out at a midsize firm), but I realized I had no interest in being a partner at any firm.

After my first week in industry, I know this was the right move for my career. There was some risk in taking a title cut, but that may be a moot point going forward.

The company I work at now has a really nice mission and vision, and the accounting department is actually really talented, young ex-Top 5, that all wanted a better work life balance.

Heck, earlier this week, the CEO swung by the campus cafeteria and had lunch with the accounting department. Brown bagged it and all.

As for my career trajectory, I could see myself working at this company for 10+ years. Within that time frame there should be an opportunity that opens up on the finance/accounting team (whether it’s FP&A, financial reporting, or otherwise).

The stress and urgency is far less exaggerated here. We aren’t rushing to complete a project in a matter of days due to client delays on getting us an important debt conversation workpaper. No one is being pulled in 12 different directions like I once was.

Most importantly, I’m getting way more active quality time with my family and feel far more present with them.
