The Neapolitan Novels by Elena Ferrante are phenomenal - compelling characters and elegant prose.
A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
Dark Matter by Blake Crouch - it’s like a science-based thriller that also has an amazing romance B-plot. Don’t be scared off by the science, it’s sooooo good. I’ve read it three times
I feel like I’m the last person in the world to read it, but I just finished Jennifer Egan’s A Visit from The Goon Squad and it was incredible.
The Road, Cormac McCarthy
If you are looking for something that is relevant to strategy and the industry, I'd recommend: "Everybody Lies: Big Data, New Data, and What the Internet Can Tell Us About Who We Really Are."
Cialdini's "Influence: the Psychology of Persuasion," is a decent primer on social psychology and behavioral economics.
Shantaram: epic novel about an epic based on real life story in India.
Cryptonomicon: WWII, buried treasure, code breaking, 90s internet nerds, it’ll make your head explode in the best way.
The Secret History by Donna Tartt. All the King's Men by Robert Penn Warren. Neither are summer beach reads, but both are well-written imo.
The new Emily Giffin is great
Seconding “Dark Matter"
Social Creature by Tara Isabella Burton
Dark Matter was great, A Little Life is tragedy porn masking itself as literature. Young Jane Young was quite good, And Again is really good if you like light sci-fi, the Three Dark Crowns series is amazing if you like YA- The Arrangement is really good if you like “summer beach reads” with a great hook and really great writing.
Not a novel, but I just started Issa Rae’s book and its delightful.
Currently reading Tom Wolfe’s Bonfire of the Vanities. It’s great.
Egan is great. So is Ferrante. But, the book that’s stuck with me the most from last year was Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates. It’s a throwback, but damn if that isn’t beautiful, dream like prose. Never saw the film, but there’s no way they could have done it justice
Two best books I’ve read recently and can’t recommend enough
She Rides Shotgun — Jordan Harper
I’m Thinking of Ending Things — Ian Reid
Bukowski
