Take Care Of Yourself, they said, right before reminding me I was 60 hours short of my billable target. It’s the mixed messaging for me. Firms love to talk about mental health, yoga classes, and balance, but every metric still rewards overwork. You can’t meditate your way out of a system that punishes rest. I’m trying to care for myself without feeling like I’m tanking my career. Why do firms act like they value well-being when every incentive says otherwise? How do you ever rest?

If you consider hitting your target to be overwork, then biglaw probably isn’t for you

I’m hundreds of hours short and I find it to be overwork. But I may be bad at capturing all my billing

funny

One thing's for sure-- figuring out how to live that life is 100% personal. Nobody is really going to help you. You have to try things out, marshal your strengths, account for your weaknesses, decide on your boundaries, decide on your sacrifices. And so what if it still isn't for you? Maybe WLB isn't that great when it really just means finding a way to just barely keep going.

the constant talk of "mental health" and whatever corollary program they establish is cover for any lawsuit incase anyone decides to jump off a bridge from overwork

At my firm and others where I know people, associates are working less hard than ever in the past 30 years, controlled for activity levels, while having more benefits and freedom from many of the more painful and obnoxious aspects of firm life from 10-30 years ago. That isn’t to say it’s great or that hours and expectations still aren’t higher than they could be to maximize wellbeing. But many of the efforts and improvements are well-intentioned and real.

That’s the model of a law firm. Firm only makes money when attorneys are billing. Maybe look for a firm with a lower billable target if you’re already feeling burnt out and not even hitting target. I find 3 day weekends to be very valuable for my sanity even if just rent a house in the woods and work on the friday.

There should be an ethical rule against minimum billing requirements that realistically result in people working more than 40 hours a week. We’re forced to take mental health CLEs when it’s the culture of the profession that is the problem.

funny

Ok but how many of those other jobs pay enough to make law school student loan payments? It’s silly to say we shouldn’t improve working conditions to try to resolve what are serious and documented mental health, substance abuse, and suicide risks just because workaholics exist. If you want to work 80 hours a week, have at it, but employers should not be requiring it.

like

The only way to do both is to plan ahead. Calculate your monthly and weekly minimum to hit your target and check in with yourself regularly. Take time when you need it but once you’re back readjust and see what you have to do to make up for it. It’s not fair but it’s the job

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.
