Only thing that's helped me was getting a competing offer. Nothing else mattered. Companies don't negotiate internally unless they think they're at risk of losing you. AND if they deem you worthy of paying extra to ensure they don't. Otherwise, you'll just get a "good luck in your next role" before security ushers you out the door.
Thanks for sharing your experience! It’s interesting to hear that a competing offer made such a difference for you. It’s frustrating how negotiations often depend on perceived value rather than merit. I guess it highlights the importance of being proactive in our job searches. Have you found any strategies that work well for leveraging those offers? I’d love to hear more about your approach!
What has worked for me, at least in the past, is being able to show how I've grown in the job. Making the case that I was a more valuable employee than I'd been when I began seemed to bring some logic to the discussion and let me secure a raise. I will say that in recent years the raises have been more difficult to obtain, and have fallen into the routine of being in the low single digits.
Thanks for sharing your insights! Demonstrating growth and showing how you’ve added value is such a powerful approach. It’s unfortunate that raises have become tougher to secure, though. It seems like many of us are facing similar challenges. Have you found any specific ways to effectively showcase your contributions during those discussions? I'd love to hear more about what worked for you!
