I had a customer once say that while yelling at a cashier who was just doing her job. It made me realize how toxic that phrase can get. Most customers are kind, but that phrase gives the wrong ones a pass to mistreat people.
I agree, whoever made that statement popular needs to redact it 😆 the customer is often very wrong and also loud! I've had people try to play that with me and I just send them to my supervisor. Nobody gets to talk to me sideways and think that's OK!

The actual statement is "IN MATTERS OF TASTE, the customer is always right". It means don't judge the person who wants a plaid suit, or thinks Navy Seals is the best movie ever, or wants to put ketchup on their hot dog.
I go with the idea that the cusomter is never wrong. Which is completely different from always being right. Well, until some idiot manages to spin it badly.
