The Lie We Tell 17-Year-Olds

We tell teenagers they can be anything they want, but drive them to only one option- the only societal definition of success: college.

“College equals success” isn’t neutral—it’s prescriptive. The fear of parents/ guardians, administrators, and school districts drives decision-making for adults more than a fit for our students.

So we do not do this in our school. We have many avenues for our students to go into. We have 10 different trades, the military, and College prep.

We have a Skilled Trade High school that our students in our three high schools can access

I am so glad that we have access to several vocation - technical high schools in my areas. My own son is an apprentice plumber now, and my daughter is a junior in high school studying veterinary science at one of the tech schools that our town high school partners with. My son did not want to go to college. My daughter is unsure but we are not steering her in any direction- we are letting her chose her path. I think that one of the best things about being in New England is the quality and variety of educational opportunities that exist in this region.

Thanks for sharing! We have “tech” school classrooms that have been converted to regular classrooms. Trade school… not ever broached.

While we have a county-wide skilled trades option, slots and programs are limited. Welding, construction, health science, law enforcement, cyber security, education, and mechatronics - all great programs, but very lacking compared to neighboring counties who offer automotive, firefighting/EMT, culinary, JROTC, cosmetology, auto body repair and other popular in demand trades. I run an alternative program. Of my last 50 graduates, two got into a trade school, two into a community college, and the rest to the local workforce. Our public education system is failing a large segment of our student population.

We gutted our vocational program to the point that our district only has two spots for each trade allowed from every school. So out of 2800 students from my school there are 18 total spots for construction, electrical, hvac , welding, fire/emt, digital arts, criminal justice, forensics and nursing. Everybody else ? Back to college prep you don't want. Another brilliant idea from the anointed class who knows what is best for our students.

Thanks, all!

Check the overtime laws for your state!!

I just recently worked 58.6 hours in a week, weekly pay, nice OT profit right? Depends on where you live.

In Iowa, there is no Overtime pay mandate, the overtime pay is at the discretion of the business. I received 58.6 hours of base pay for the week.

If the company makes less than $1 million per year or does not engage in intercontinental sales, the company is not required to pay the overtime rate of time and a half, just your base rate.
