Yup, that has been my experience as well, it became especially clear to me when I went to college. It was a small liberal arts school and I got to interact with people of all kinds of social and economic backgrounds. There are actually a lot of white and rich people who are sympathetic and have the capacity to empathize, but it's like there's barrier when it comes to taking that next step. It's usually "I get you and I feel for you, BUT...". I think on some subconscious level they can't fully accept it because that would be like admitting that they're lot in life comes at the expense of others and to bring us all on the same level playing field would inherently require them to be taken down a notch. It's self-preservation mentality. That's my theory at least.
Thank you. It can definitely be quite disorientating to be in those kinds of spaces; there's a sense of whiplash that comes with peeking behind the curtain and seeing how people higher up the chain see the world. It's funny, the same way that we can't dissociate our personalities and worldview from our struggles, they also can't dissociate their own from their privileged positions.
