When you try to negotiate salary you always have to make it about yourself. Make a case based on your experience and what you bring to the table. Stress that you'll be a valuable employee and your compensation should reflect that.
Did you discuss the range for the position and during that discussion did you discuss that qualities or experience would get someone to the upper end of that range ? Do you have those skills? If so you can make the argument that you deserve that upper end. However, if the upper end of this range isn’t even doable for you OR you don’t qualify for it o too you’re kinda stuck.
Look up the comps in your area for similar role and experience. They want to be a competitive employer and they should realize that any candidate in the same situation would have the same expectations. You're not being unreasonable. You're being realistic to the market.
I’m confused? Didn’t the Hiring Manager set your salary when he sent the job requisition? If the HM felt you deserved more, he would have the latitude to do so, maybe after approval from his Boss or the Finance Mgr after your interview. If you are ok not getting the job then ask the HM but negotiating salary is not prevalent in today’s hiring climate. Hope it works out for you.
Thanks for all of the advice and suggestions to all who responded. It meant a lot to me that you did so.
I got the old "rejection" letter again - through the recruiter. Could anyone advise of how to just not deal with them? I'd take the rejection better from a hiring manager and not a "middle man".
