At DLA there is a FDI Regulatory “MD” who is a complete nightmare to work for. Came from EY and is not even a barred attorney. How does DLA give partner-level authority to people who are not even attorneys?

If it's this specific might as well name names

Practice under the supervision of barred attorneys, not unlike paralegals. As far as the authority is concerned though, it’s a good question - I know K&E has this in some specialist groups too

like

CFOs of law firms are also given this level of authority. Not sure what the issue is? They just need to be salaried and not share in the profits.

like

I think what they’re saying is these people lead groups of attorneys and practice groups / are their managers, not like a CFO. I’m not saying it’s an issue per se but it’s interesting how it works

like

That’s not true about CFO’s of law firms? They can say “you can’t buy more pencils.” They can’t say - “send this by midnight.”

If they don’t have a license on the line to send a doc they don’t have final say. Just like at the end of the day it’s your word over a paralegal’s.

Also this is part of why partners have final say. It’s their name on the line for a malpractice claim (usually).

When BigLaw attorneys interview students, how soon afterward do they give feedback? What kind of feedback do you give as an interviewer at your firm (e.g. qualitative, quantitative, thumbs up, thumbs down, veto)? Does everyone get in a room or do you just submit the forms to one hiring partner, and/or to a black box? If you don't click with the student, what would make you still give them a thumbs up? Sorry if my questions are a little neurotic... !

I can’t stand people that brag about how busy they are or how late they stayed up doing X. They may think they’re just complaining, but the sanctimonious tone is unbearable. I promise you, no one is impressed. You are the problem with this industry.

“Keep costs down”???? I am happy to keep costs down by not working on this ducking matter anymore. Maybe stop saying yes to matters that are too small to justify our rates and staffing an expensive senior person on them when you’re already dying trying to get anything staffed. You didn’t have to do shit on this matter, didn’t hear you complaining about my taking the lead and managing everything for you when that was happening. >.>
