It depends on your group and firm. It seems like it is more similar to musical chairs, in which people are swapping firms instead of over-hiring. I think there was an overhire in restructuring work but I don’t believe to the level of mass layoffs.
I suppose the answer depends on whether the hiring is actually materially changing the leverage ratio in the group. A lot of the hiring right now is just to replace associates that are leaving.
If your firm let people go 12 years ago, then you likely have a good idea of their strategy. Hire a ton and cut the bottom performers when times get tough
Yes. I was speaking with a partner today about this. He said he’s lived through too many ups and downs to know how this will end.
I don’t really worry. Associates leave big law at such a rapid pace that firms can almost always slim down just by slowing/stopping hiring and letting attrition take its course.
That’s why I said almost always. Maybe when the whole economy implodes, things are a little different
