I can’t begin to understand what kind of response you are looking for.
Pitch work is just like any other work: an opportunity to show your talents, sharpen your skills and interact with teams, executives and clients you otherwise might not get a chance to.
LOL I needed a laugh today. Thank you.
Wow holy fuck. “Helping” that’s not what it’s called Baby AD.
Personally, it helped me get seen by my CCO and build relationships with new ECDs and other creatives. But it’s a situation where you will need to board your dog, get babysitters for your kids and work sometimes 70+ hours a week. If you can’t do this, it may not look good for you in front of people who wouldn’t normally notice you. Mixed bag, but it helped me break out.
I’m confused why people are saying this builds your book. Who puts pitches in their books?!
Pitches are for strengthening your network, not your portfolio.
Since you can’t show it publicly because you’ll get yourself and/or your agency in legal trouble, that’s why I said you can show it privately, if you absolutely must show that work. So pitch work is not really helping your portfolio very much because it has to be hidden every time.
People always remember their creative comrades in the trenches of a pitch, even years later. Those comrades will call you up years later to join them for freelance work or to be hired at another agency, because they remembered how well you worked under pressure. Half the time they won’t remember what work you did in the pitch itself. You know, the unproduced work that has to be hidden so you won’t get anyone sued.
That’s why I said “pitches are for strengthening your network, not your portfolio.” Hope that clarifies things.
Yes. Even if the project gets killed/client doesn’t buy it, it’s still great work for my portfolio. Plus getting practice pitching/presenting will make you a better art director.
What do I know 🤷♂️
It’s your job. But I can understand if that’s all you do.
It certainly helps get access to senior leadership
If you get your ideas through a few rounds, and you don’t complain about the hours - everything the CDs said above. But I’ve also seen many fail in pitches and it did not help them at all, quite the opposite. Not everyone gets or relishes how a pitch functions and how is purely work for work sake and a big all-in collaboration. Your ideas usually become communal your name not attached, others may work on a seed you tossed in and/or take your work and make it better while you’re sent back to you regular client work. You can’t complain or stress out. It is very intense and fast paced. The amount of work that ends up piled on the floor can be disheartening.
Like you have a choice?
Don’t expect it to help you where you are. But it will build your book, which will help you take the next step up elsewhere.
