You don’t need an MBA to be in house
If you have a lifetime of account and strategy experience, no one is going to care about an MBA. Not a single person at my company has an MBA
Feeling “stuck” is a mindset, and not one that anyone should ever have. Having agency experience is valuable. Don’t ever think you can’t find something else
Find a career coach or speak to recruiters that handle in house. Find out what they are looking for. Good exec recruiters will give you honest feedback
It’s all about experience. Start casting the net and talking to people in the industry. You can also start looking for speaking opportunities, give talks at workshops and throw seminars, knowledge and experience is power—start sharing.
The more you give the more you get.
There are very few companies that require an mba if you have the experience. It could be noted on the job description but it’s not mandatory. Network like crazy and remember you being a unique skill set that people want and need.
If your name isn’t on the door, you will “age out.”
If your name is on the door, you will “age out.”
Plan accordingly.
I think there are places out there that do tuition reimbursement. Do what you want. You’re not “stuck” anywhere. Do research. Network.
Thank you. I’ve been doing a ton of research and networking, maybe I’m just in a funk right now but seems the more I learn the more grim things feel. I’m account side, not sure if it matters but I do keep hearing that an MBA is key.
I’m sure it helps, but if you’re good at your job, you’ll be ok. Account folks are in better shape than creatives. Keep looking. You’ll find a place you’re happier out and the funk will pass.
I don’t think you need an MBA even being an account person to be on client side. Surely some places you do, but definitely not everywhere. Especially if you have a lot of experience, which seems to me that if you’re a VP, you probably have a lot of. It probably would help some, but I think most companies would take relevant experience over some degree that doesn’t prove anything.
That’s what I did. I love in house. Less ego. More life balance. Find a brand you love and go work for them. It’s not ‘that’ different in that way. I do miss true agency briefs and traffic processes at times, though, but overall it’s been a solid move.
