Thinking about living in another city for 1-2 weeks to get a feel for if I’d like to permanently move there. Any tips on this process or other people’s experiences? Any good hotels / deals for staying in a new city for a while (but not long enough for an Airbnb)? Had a friend who did this but was house-hunting so did Airbnbs; for reference when I move I’ll be looking for an apartment

You should really try to get an Airbnb in the area you’re wanting to live in. That way you can get a feel for how it is. I just never really felt at home in an hotel and it’s much harder to get the vibes of the area.

I don’t understand the comment aboht not long enough for an Airbnb - you can stay in an Airbnb for as little as a single night.

I also agree that you should do 1 month to really test it out. My boyfriend and I are currently teleworking while traveling the country. We just did our first month and now are on our way to our second place for another month. 1-2 weeks would feel rushed

I think US only

It’s cheaper to do a month long airbnb depending on the city.

Deloitte makes it really easy to move if you do decide to go through with it—I submitted my office transfer request during a transfer freeze and expected it to take a while to get approved, but it was approved literally the day the freeze lifted. My insurance stayed the same and I remained on my project (after taking some PTO to physically move), the process was smoother than I ever could have expected.

Speaking from experience, you should definitely look into an AirBnB in your new area (I didn’t and wish I did, even though I ended up loving my new city). It’s a much better way to get a feel for where you might end up living. You also might want to wait until September to actually move; prices tend to be much higher in the summer as new grads move to their own places before dropping off in fall as the market eases up, but obviously that depends on your circumstances and current living situation.

If the move would involve a time zone change you should discuss it with your current team to determine if you should stay on your current project with your current hours, stay on the project but work different hours, or roll off to one in your new time zone, but that’s up to your own discretion.

I’m not sure how frequent they are—I’m under the impression that it was mostly a response to covid and having people stay at their home office even if they had to stay with family during lockdown, but your RM would probably be able to give a more accurate answer! I think during normal years you can put in a request basically anytime; if there’s a freeze you can still move, you just won’t be able to change your official home office until it goes through.

Try a month or two

I am unable to do a full month due to other factors lol - so any tips for just a 1-2 week long stay would be appreciated!:)

If you can’t do a month just do as long as you can, and focus on getting an actual “living” experience in the city rather than a “vacation” vibe. Use public transport or rent a car if you’d have your own in the city, get an AirBnB or a Residence Inn so you could cook for yourself and check out grocery stores nearby, see what sort of stuff there is in the city related to any hobbies you have!

Stay with friends there?

I did this for 4-6 weeks in different cities and used a site called FurnishedFinder. Built for travel nurses but good for airbnb type properties with good flexibility and much lower prices

Try Trusted House Sitters - you get to stay at someone’s place for free for just taking care of their animal(s)

Has anyone reevaluated their retirement methods after a life-altering experience? I used to invest a lot more ($5k or so a month), but after losing one of my parents last year (mid-50s), I’ve wondered if it’s better to just enjoy life as we are living it. So, I started investing a lot less. But I always see people on here talking about all of these retirement schemes (backdoor Roth, mega-backdoor Roth, etc.) and I’m wondering if there’s a happy middle ground somewhere.

What is everyone’s take on the NYC housing market? More people and businesses are moving out. I’d imagine it has to continue to dip. Also, they’re considering turning adding more units by converting commercial space into residential space. Inventory is going to be through the roof for rentals. I’d think that has to ultimately impact home prices.
