Decently sized country and second most biodiverse country in the world. With that said, the climate is generally the same but highly depends on where you’re at - caratagena is hot, Medellin is usually 70-80s and Bogotá is 50-60s.
Barranquilla has a massive Carnival festival that you could do and couple that with stops in Santa Marta or Cartagena. I would say Cartagena is massively tourist so you should be fine there vs Santa Marta and Barranquilla would be a little more off the beaten path.
I went to Bogotá, Medellin, Villa de Leyva, Salento, Guatape, and Cartagena. I would skip Villa de Leyva and consider Santa Marta if I did it again. There’s some safety issues with buses between cities so I’d recommend flying (if longer distances). Some areas of the bigger cities can be unsafe - the main one to keep in mind is Candelaria in Bogotá as tourists do go there. It’s ok during the day for the most part but sketchy at night. Uber was fine for getting around. Take other standard precautions like not showing valuables and being careful at night wherever you are. If doing Airbnb, just make sure the area is ok as it’s easy to not understand the neighborhoods. Less likely that good hotels are in a very bad area.
I spent my time in Medellin for almost two months and got back a few weeks ago!
Make sure you:
- go to Provenza to party/drink
- go to guatape
- rafting on the rio verde (go to the Masaya hostel to ask about it”
- comuna trece tour
Also, the food in colombia is absolutely horrible. It’s prob the worst food you’ll ever have in your life if I’m being honest. They do not season they’re food AT ALL (and I’m latino, so I know good food when I taste it)
But you prob won’t believe me. So just Google it, or find out for yourself. Do NOT go to Colombia thinking you’re going to have good food. You will HATE the trip. Try to eat fast food/VERY high end restaurants and you’ll be fine. Anyone that tells you different is either Colombian or lying 💀
Amazing culture, views, and way of life down there tho. Everyone is very nice and willing to help out. Just make sure you exercise your common sense haha
Oh my goodness, thank you! I will be packing so seasoning with me!
Thank you all for the suggestions! This is super helpful. Very excited!
