It depends on how much parking is where you live.
I live in River North and was dropping $250 a month for parking. Car was paid off. Factor in Insurance, city sticker, registration, gas, basic maintenance- looking at $500+ a month.
I give myself a budget of $100 a week for Ubers and Zip cars - most weeks it’s less than $50. It was $0 for 4 months.
That’s to say for me it wasn’t worth it. I do have a zip car membership and occasionally get one for an entire day and that’s about $100 all in.

Look around at parking when you do the equation - most of River North is $200-$250.
Yeah - Zip Car isn’t perfect. You have to book farther in advance than you used to, especially on a weekend.
I rent a car from Accenture whenever I need one for a weekend trip. About $35 a day plus gas

Rent cars for weekend trips. Summer weekend trips are great temptation for buying, but 3 or 4 months from now when it is freezing and snowing, those trips will be much less appealing, but you'll be paying the same to park/insure/maintain a car.
I found having a car in Chicago to be useful even for just day to day stuff. Going to groceries stores further away and loading up, being able to drive to stores outside of the downtown area, etc. I don’t think you’ll regret it especially if you’ll be using it on the weekends to drive considerable distance.
I was thinking about this too. Tough decision. Thinking about moving rather than paying for parking. Not sure how safe rental cars are these days.

Same - I wipe down the steering wheel, keys, buttons, handles and usually sit on a blanket. All spotless.

I would just rent using your firms discount code.
Even if I was give a Model S for free tomorrow, that would equate additional expenses of at least $5000+ year if wanted to use it occasionally.
Yes - this makes sense.

Just passed two years carless in Chicago and haven’t missed it once. I’ve done some weekend rentals for nearby trips and it’s absolutely worth it.
Reading this bowl is interesting since I have a car in Chicago and just about everyone that I know has one - this probably has a lot to do with I was born and raised in the city. When I meet people who moved here they usually don’t have cars - so interesting difference.
I have a car and I live in the Loop. I can’t imagine not having one. I drive to work, I drive to meet up with friends since my friends live all across the city, meet up with family. Very worth it to me but depends on your lifestyle.

I used to live in Lakeview and absolutely needed my car when I lived there - fewer things were walkable. I sold it when I moved to River North.
I usually walk to work, occasionally take the bus [25 minute walk vs 15 on the bus].
I literally walk everywhere - work, gym, vet, etc.
The ubiquity of grocery delivery helps, although I always get groceries when I have a zipcar [or uber if I need to]
I’m curious about your comment about living in the loop and driving to work - where’s your office at ?
