They probably laid off some 200k/yr FTEs and are now drooling at picking up some 80k/yr FCBers.
FTE? Full-Time Employees. FCB? Foote Cone Belding, who were just “absorbed” by BBDO.
They’re no doubt looking to hire at $20K less than what those they just laid off were earning.
Gut has basically always been smoke and mirrors. They’re in the business of creating PR for themselves. Sometimes they can trick a client into thinking winning an award will be good for their brand. But really, it’s self-service not client service.
Layoffs are par for the course in our industry. Lose an account one quarter, win three accounts another quarter. Not to mention layoffs are sometimes a sly way to cut lower performers or “problem” personalities. I don’t doubt that GUT is hiring. They get all the RFPs.
ACD1 that is a good point. From memory there is a talk from the Doordash CMO who addresses this in one of his presentations and why they put W+K as lead.
Alas, no GUT for me—I don't own a one-size-too-small black T-shirt
Hot take: but “10+ layoffs each year” isn’t really a layoff or a sign of a problem, it’s trimming the fat. I don’t mean to be insensitive but sometimes people don’t work out, accounts are lost, shit happens, and calling it a layoff is better for everyone. That’s showbiz baby.
Also, I said laying off 10+ people. And I don’t mean randomly letting go of a person or two. I mean having layoff time. Where in two hours you’ve lost 10+ employees.
What the heck do they even make? How are any of them employed?
It’s like most agencies. There must be bread and butter work that gets churned out but case studies, new business initiatives, networking etc are the areas that create awareness and draw new clients.
Most work is won by WOM / recommendation and relationship building. Slowly acquiring new areas within a client or new departments or product ranges.
It cost a lot of money to open new offices on different countries every six months, you know?
SC2 yes but it needs the accounts to prove it. They must be winning work in order to grow in those areas/regions.
The goal will be to grow as quick as possible to be acquired but the numbers need to be consistent and exponential in growth.
This could be to save face or collect resumes.

I think GUT is relevant purely off the name. That’s it.
Recognition and relevance are two different things. Like we’ve heard of penny farthings and Calvin Coolidge but they’re irrelevant.
