This may be or seem like a very generalized question but how did some of you all start? Where do you start? I’m curious about learning about the process of creating a startup, but honestly want to learn more…really looking for recourses, good books and stories!! TIA!!

A banker friend of mine asked me if I could consult for a client of his in a different industry than I worked in my day job. So I moonlighted for a while (I was at a big 4). 1 client turned into 4 and before I knew it I had recruited 5 consultants to help. One of my recruits was a friend- we had been kicking around startup ideas. So I quit EY and we cofounded what started as a consulting firm. Within a year we saw how our clients were becoming successful (on the business/operating plans we wrote for them) so we acquired one of our client’s businesses in exchange for equity. We also did some consulting for equity in these startups. We repeated that multiple times.

I’m now on the lookout for a new cash flowing biz to acquire so if anyone has something interesting, please pitch me.

This was not my first startup, I did a few before, but this one has been going for 7 years now.

Hey guys. So I am an actuarial analyst who got started about three months ago. I had a chance to do a data scientist intern, which I really loved. I am three months into the full time position as an actuarial analyst and I am finding the job not as exciting. It certainly isn’t what I have expected. Does anyone have any experience of moving out of the actuarial world to the data science role? How hard was the transition? What are the steps that you took? I am seeking for advice and help! How has working at a startup affected your long term career prospects?

I'm a data scientist with MBB experience for context, currently a lead data scientist. I was recently given two offers:

1. VP of ML at a startup (250 cash, 1% equity over 4 years)
2. Director of Data Science at a F100 (350 cash, 0% equity)

Short term I'm not as worried about exact compensation as I can pay the bills, only 30 and no kids. But long term, which looks better on a resume? Any advice would be great!
