No it matters down the road
Yup. I previously worked in healthcare. I was basically a department director. I reported directly to a system level VP. I had 15 direct reports, who each had 5-10 reports. But my title was Analyst. I came in on a restructuring project, created a new system department that pulled in hospital employees, and ultimately I was placed in charge of that department. Got a raise but we never submitted requisitions to change titles because COVID kicked in and there were other priorities. When I applied to other admin roles in healthcare, I was completely ignored. I got lucky in the fact that consulting firms cared more about experience.
Titles are super important... but for 2x my salary, and if the role involves work I'm passionate about, you can call me a sandwich artist for all I care.
It helps framing. If you send a "sales rep" to meet an SVP to pitch a deal, the chances are the SVP has a last minute commitment. So you send SVP Sales - same person (may be better groomed to match up an imaginary figure Don Draper?)
It’s fairly important to your brand and taking a next step in your career.
Easy example: seeing “senior consultant” vs “manager” vs “director” on a resume
I move around in the start-up space, so they tend to look at my experience anyway. We all know HR and founders like to play around with pay-level and title. So, doesn't matter for me.
Chances are those are not the right people for you (startups are not about that). Seek exclusively candidates that are ready, willing and able to work in a startup (talanddev.com has a fast, easy and affordable talent matching network that does just that)
Real talk, how do I double my salary?
I'll even drop the Senior for it :)
