A long-distance arrangement seems like it would work only temporarily- either the relationship, the job, or the distance will likely need to change after a period of time. It might make sense while someone is finishing school, finding a new job, etc. but long-term will likely wear on your family (and be an added expense).
A hundred percent. I'm not a fan of that idea at all. I just hope it doesn't come down to that.
Congratulations!! I’m a huge fan of a pros and cons list. As you and your partner discuss, it may be helpful to visually see things written down to weigh everything out.
Will do this! Thanks
Coach
Besides the raise (adjusted for cost of living factors) is the new job a good career opportunity? Will it lead to bigger and better things down the road in a way your current job cannot? Will you be happier in the new job? Assuming the answer is “yes” to all of these, what are the chances of finding a job that provides these benefits/opportunities without having to relocate? All things to consider.
I just (this week) started a new job that requires relocation. I’m going to rent something short term/furnished and not make any major life decisions for a few months while I feel out this new opportunity. Maybe I decide it’s worth relocating my whole life in 3-6 months. Maybe I hate it and decide to do something else. Maybe they change their minds and let me work remotely from my previous location. Who knows. The opportunity was too good to pass up, so I’m at least trying it out.
Congrats to you! And thanks for sharing your story. It was insightful and inspiring for my own story :) Hope all goes well for you
Congratulations! Hope you're taking the time to celebrate this. I can imagine how tough this is but it truly is a conversation to be had with your family. Esp your partner. Have you done that yet?
Yes and no. They've been fragmented conversations so far. Need to have a solid one. Thanks!
Congrats!!
I think the first thing I’d do is compare the cost of living where I am to the place I’m going. If it’s still a significant increase, then I’d consider it.
I’m a big fan of a pros and cons list. What are the best things that could come from this? What are the drawbacks from taking it?
I like to imagine I took the job. Am I excited, sad, happy?
If it’s the first time family is hearing that you are considering taking the job, I’d ease into it with “I’m considering this job offer I got” and be open to listening to their questions and thoughts. Maybe they have questions you want answers to before taking it.
Thank you! And thanks for your amazing response. This really helps
Would also consider what options there are for your partner / family. Moving an hour away isn’t too difficult, moving to the other side of the world is a huge change. Equally there are some countries that can be culturally challenging (eg Middle East) or can be difficult for your partner to get a new job. It’s a very different proposition to do NY -> London, vs moving to Papua New Guinea….
