I went in-house and don’t regret it, but know people who did, seems it often boils down to:
1. Significant pay cut (especially when coupled with reality that they are only working slightly less)
2. Have difficulty shifting from “revenue generator” to “cost center” mindset
3. (For smaller teams) miss working with teams of attorneys
FWIW, I also think people regularly leave big law and forget just how bad it was, go back for the $$$, and then still hate it.
lol it’s so true, I’m coming up on a year out of big law after doing an 8 year bid and I’m starting to only remember the good times 😂

There are some sweatshop in-house jobs. And there are a ton that are 40 hrs a week making $300k+ TC.
Man was not made to live life in 6 minute increments…
I wasnt necessarily excited for the in house role I ended up getting. I, like you, was stoked to leave the unhappy and overworked situation I was in. But I'm still happier I think. I lucked out with a great team and awesome boss. Regardless of whether escaping misery was the motivator rather than excitement about the new role, I just looked at what I would have to look forward to if I stayed at a firm and it looked so much harder and more miserable than what I had already gone through. That's when I knew I couldn't stay at a firm and made peace with the in house move
yes, but my team in house is managed horribly. would diligence your manager and colleagues to try to suss out toxicity and unspoken norms that may tank your experience. i wish i did.

OP, why do you want to go in-house?
Rising Star
But that’s why you want to leave your current firm.
Why do you want to work in-house? (The actual reasons, not the BS we say in interviews…)
A good team in-house is vital and needs to be sussed out during the interview process. A good team makes in house life amazing
On the flip side, you could try to lateral to a different firm and find a better team than you currently have but I think a good team in big law just makes life less insufferable at best (you’ll still be miserable at times, but it can be bearable)
The question for me was whether I wanted my work to be bearable + amazing pay vs. life to be objectively good with less pay!
