I did it for exactly that reason - bang for buck. I love it down here. Most places in the city are easily accessible from here with all the train lines converging. I like the combination of the old town feel, accessibility to the water, nice apartments. Drawbacks for me would be the lack of decent supermarkets.
This is dead on. Lived down there for 3 years and exact same thoughts on benefits and downsides.
Used to live there...
Pros: transport (Super easy access to the train/quick Uber to most of Manhattan and Brooklyn/easy access to the ferries and PATH), cost (still expensive for almost anywhere that isn’t NYC, but by NYC standards you can get more space and a nicer building with amenities more easily), relatively quiet a lot of evenings (may be a con, but if you want a less noisy spot than midtown for example, it’s good), easy access to lots of great waking/biking paths by the river
Cons: Sometimes really didn’t feel like living in NYC - it caters mostly to the 9-5 crowd so things close early, even grocery stores/pharmacies. Not many great bars/restaurants, and you’ll rarely find yourself actually hanging out there, I basically was always further north or in BK on the weekends. Even though it’s cheaper than most of Manhattan, it can feel a lot like you’re still paying NYC prices to not really feel like you live in NYC. Tons of tourists too (although that could also be said for midtown, etc).
Overall, I’d say how much you enjoy it will depend on your price range - just like most of NYC. Personally, I wanted to live somewhere with more night life/bars/restaurants, and was able to pay more for that without much impact (I moved to Greenwich village). But at my old price Fi Di was a good bet. And if you prefer more quiet anyway it’s awesome.

Just echoing that I believe EY2 nailed the cons for most people and it is why I’ve avoided living in Fidi
I like it. Despite the lack of good food options I find it quite livable with nicer apartments, and quiet/good for sleeping.
Previously was in east village, which was fun, but too dirty and noisy for me
Lived in Fidi for 4 years and it’s amazing. The apartments and area are really nice. All the subway lines run down there so you are connected to everything. If you are the type of person that wants to go out next door to your apt then this isn’t the place. However there are a ton of eateries now and they are actually open late, contrary to the above post. Happy to chat further if you have questions!
