NJ to avoid NYC tax
I believe you’re on the hook for NYC tax if your office is there. You the tax and claim as credit on NJ state return.
It’s just a pain to have to file in 2 states def just do NJ
For me, I’d rather do NYC. The multi state tax thing is such a pain but I value my time long term more. That’s an additional 1.5 hrs I could have to myself every day I’m in office. That’s time to make and have dinner, watch a movie, or sleep early.
Pro
Nyc cause it’s awesome and the happy hours / coworker bonding time will be better

Weigh out the long term, this is a not an easy decision and you have to see what it is best based on your career plan - usually the NYC office has better exposure but you can still work out of the NJ office and still make regular trips to NYC for FaceTime if senior management is there.
I do have to admit that I would rather commute via train or bus vs a car. Over an hour in a car will weigh on you, whereas being in a train or bus you can nap, watch a show or listen to a podcast without weaving through traffic. In addition, you will have to factor the cost of gas and wear and tear on your car - I had to make this decision years ago and I chose to be in NYC.

Save the commute and you’re paying NJ tax. Not NY. You’re good bro. Save some time on your life with 40 min commute v. 1.5 hrs!

At junior levels if you want to have a life, I’d recommend NYC over deep in NJ any day. But can you be tied to one office and work out of the other, like most consulting firms? If so then that’s fine.
Agreed! I’ve had to file multi state in the past and I’d rather avoid it. Thanks for the feedback. Wanted to see if there was something I wasn’t considering
Letting the tax tail wag the dog is dumb
If you think u are someone that enjoys nyc and the commute is categorically closer than do that.
A decent firm will allow you to switch office mapping if you decide later you move more Jersey and stick with that.
